Is it true that I am legally responsible for the opening my bubbler creates?

YES!
Having a bubbler running more than necessary creates very serious liability to the property owner.
This is why its so important to have someone checking and regularly adjusting the timers on your bubblers. Muskoka Lakes Association (MLA) recommends that bubblers are maintained to only have ice openings of 5 to 10ft.
This also helps ensure that ice does not break free from shorelines prematurely, creating floating icebergs that cause serious harm to anything in its path.
"Duty to safeguard opening in ice
263 (1) Every one who makes or causes to be made an opening in ice that is open to or frequented by the public is under a legal duty to guard it in a manner that is adequate to prevent persons from falling in by accident and is adequate to warn them that the opening exists."
